Based on the 1914 play by S. Ansky that greatly formed and informed Yiddish theater, The Dybbuk in this film version was shot over two decades later with some substantial additions to the plot. Set in the Pale of Settlement, two close friends, both with pregnant wives, vow that their children will marry. After the children are born, the two close friends go in separate directions; however, fate brings the two families back together without realizing who their children are.
